The idea of creating a cultural movement „Ars Aevi“ in Sarajevo dates back to 1992.
1ABOUT
In a besieged city, driven by the recent bombing of the Olympic museum, Enver Hadziomerspahic and few other fellow Sarajevans invited artists across the world to react to injustice and terror by forming a museum of contemporary art in Sarajevo, containing a collection of their representative art pieces. Many artists responded positively to this request in the following years, which marked the start of a long term project designed to promote Sarajevo as the center of cultural exchange in the region. Current collection contains over 160 art pieces, with works of prominent artists like Anesh Kapoor, Marina Abramović, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jannis Kounellis and many others contributing to the project. While the collection can currently be viewed at Ars Aevi Art Depot in Skenderija Cultural and Sports Center, the plan is to move it to a new facility, providing the space needed for the future Ars Aevi Museum. Renzo Piano, famous Italian architect and honorary citizen of Sarajevo, provided the building design.
