Museum „Alija Izetbegović“ is founded in honor of the first president of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Alija Izetbegović.
1ABOUT
It is located in the Kapi-kula Ploča and Širokac, two towers of an 18th century fortress in the Old town neighbourhood called Vratnik. The fortress was part of the city's fortification built after the raid of the Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy in 1697. The museum opened its doors in 2007, on the 4th anniversary of the President's death. Even though the Museum is primarily dedicated to life and work of Alija Izetbegović, it also provides valuable insight into the more recent history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Museum's travelling exhibition of photographs about Alija Izetbegović also had a lot of success in inducing the interest of the public for the important role Izetbegović had during and after the war in Bosnia. Together with Martyr's Memorial Cemetery Kovači which is located nearby, the Museum represents a symbol of struggle and resistance to many Bosnian people.
